In this study, a novel strategy adopted for coping with reduced cellulose levels is provided. Maize cells with reduced cellulose contents synthesize shorter, albeit extensively cross-linked hemicelluloses as part of their coping strategy. UPR and ERAD are two related systems for eliminating misfolded proteins caused by stresses.
