Ultrastructural Changes of Plasmodesmata in Staminal Hairs of Setcreasea purpurea During Development

Li Ming-yi and Yang Shi-jie

Abstract: Structural changes of plasmodesmata occurred in along with growth, development and senescence of staminal hair cells of Setcreasea purpurea. The plasmodesmata in the staminal hair cells of buds and open flowers were normal having a diameter of 50 mm. Those of senescent flowers became enlarged and underwent modification, such as the appressed endoplasmic reticulum disintegrated and the cell wall around the plasmodesmata degraded, so that it formed a channel with such as a diameter of 100 nm, twice or threefold as that of normal plasmodesmata. In the process of plasmodesma enlargement and modification, a series of changes occurred in the organelles.

Key words: Setcreasea purpurea, Plasmodesmata, Intercellular transport, Enlargement and modification of plasmodesmata
