Xu et al. (pages 235–248) demonstrate that OsCERK1 directly recognizes chitin molecules, which play a key role in mediating rice immunity against fungal pathogens and symbiotic relationships with AM fungi in rice. Structural information on chitin recognition by OsCERK1 can facilitate engineering of chitin receptors to enhance rice disease resistance. The cover image shows the crystal structure of OsCERK1-ECD in complex with (NAG)6, in which the second LysM domain (LysM2) of OsCERK1-ECD is the major binding site of the chitin oligomer.
