Cover Caption: Floral Ontogeny of Cercidiphyllum japonicum
Due to its peculiar flower morphology, the taxonomy position of Cercidiphyllum japonicum has long been argued. The flower, as shown in the cover and electron microscopy study described in pages 1400–1408, has a single tepal (so called bract) and a single carpel. The unicarpellate status could be a highly reduce and advance characteristic that makes the species isolated from both fossil Cercidiphyllumlike plants and its extant affinities.
