Cover Caption: The genus Aspidistra includes the common houseplant Aspidistra elatior (cast-iron plant) and many key components of East Asian karst floras. Members of this genus display remarkable species richness and floral diversity, most notably the fungus-mimicking pistils shown on the cover, which may facilitate pollination by fungus gnats. Yang et al. (pages 2964–2981) reconstructed a dense RAD-seq phylogeny and demonstrated that Aspidistra underwent one of the most rapid plant radiations in the Old World. Integrating environment-, trait- and diversitydependent models with phylogenetic path analysis, they revealed that fluctuations in paleotemperature and the East Asian monsoon, together with interspecific competition and pollination mutualism, acted independently and synergistically to accelerate diversification.
